Why Do You Eat Leftovers All Your Life?

Give your best energy and time to yourself, not others

Imagine cooking a meal you love.

You spend hours choosing the best ingredients, carefully preparing the dish, and seasoning it to perfection.

But when it’s time to eat, you give most of it away to others.

You are left with the scraps, barely enough to satisfy your hunger.

Now imagine giving your amazing meal to someone you don’t even like.

And you eat the leftovers.

Sounds absurd, doesn’t it?

Yet, this is exactly what most people do.

Just replace that meal with your time and energy.

Your time and energy are your most valuable resources.

Yet, each day, you give most of your best hours to your employer—your peak focus, creativity, and effort.

By the time you are done, there’s barely anything left for the things that matter—your health, family, hobbies, and dreams.

I’ve experienced this for YEARS and am writing this post from personal experience.

But why does this happen?

Here are a few reasons:

  1. You do not know anything better:
You are following a scripted life, one that society expects you to follow.
Go to school →Go to college → Get a degree → Get another degree → Get a job → Get married → Have kids → Change jobs in between → Build/Buy a house → Get settled → ???

  2. You are afraid of taking risks:
You know what makes you come alive, but you follow the ‘safe path’.

  3. You wait for ‘someday’:
You wait until you have ‘that designation’, enough money, and a perfect plan.
You prioritize all projects except your life’s project.
    The ‘someday’ never comes.

Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change.

Jim Rohn

Here’s the hard truth:

If you don’t make yourself your #1 priority, no one else will.

If you don’t invest in yourself, you’ll spend your life building someone else’s vision.

This isn’t just about work.

It’s about how you live your life.

Are you truly living for yourself?

Or are you surviving on scraps…

while the things that light you up remain untouched?

It’s time to stop leaving yourself the leftovers.

The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule but to schedule your priorities.

Stephen Covey

Here’s how:

Here are 3 actionable steps to start giving your best energy to what matters:

  1. Create your sacred hours
Sacred hours are dedicated chunks of time for your growth.

They are the intersection of the times when:

    • You are most productive (clear thinking, high energy levels)

    • You can be the least responsive (unreachable, distraction-free)

Identify one to two slots per day.
    Send yourself a calendar invite.

Defend them like your life depends on it.
    Because it does.

  2. Reclaim your energy during the day

Your energy is limited, so stop spending it on things that don’t matter.

    • Say NO more often: Politely but firmly decline tasks or requests that don’t align with your priorities.

    • Set boundaries: Limit the time and energy you give to people and events that drain you.

    • Focus on essentials: List 2-3 things you must accomplish each day. Let the rest wait.

  3. Revisit your WHY
It is easy to caught up in a linear, scripted life and forget why you are doing what you are doing.

    Ask yourself questions like:

    • What really matters to me?

    • Where is all this leading to?

    • What do I want to experience in life?

    • Am I living the full expression of my life? If not, how?

  4. Take calculated risks:
The biggest risk in today’s world is not taking any risk.
Give yourself small challenges to come out of your comfort zone.

Don’t wait until you are ready, because you will never be.
Start. Make decisions. Make mistakes. Learn. Refine. Repeat.

Don’t trade your authenticity for approval.

Brené Brown

In closing

Imagine how your life would change…

if you gave yourself the first and best serving of your energy every day.

Not the leftovers. The best.

You’ll feel more alive, more in control, and more aligned with the life you truly want.

Remember this:

When you prioritize yourself, you are not just improving your own life.
You are becoming better for the people around you, too.

Start today. It is never too late.

What actions will you take to design a life where you no longer leave yourself the leftovers?
